This socially critical documentary film aims to address one of the greatest problems facing contemporary Slovak society — the increasingly significant outflow of intellectually gifted and otherwise talented individuals abroad. It is a problem that has long remained unresolved and, moreover, has not received sufficient attention, certainly not attention proportionate to its seriousness and the impact it will have on the future of this country. Since this issue primarily concerns the younger generation, the film also serves as a kind of exploration of their world. However, its central and foremost theme remains the critical condition of the Slovak educational system and schooling as a whole. This is, in fact, the main reason why young Slovaks decide to leave the country, while only very few return after completing their studies. |
At the same time, the documentary does not focus on the younger generation from only one perspective. Its ambition is to create a kind of generational portrait, presenting not only a broad range of life plans, but also the universal values today’s young people on the threshold of adulthood identify with, as well as the social opinions and attitudes they hold. The film seeks to penetrate the essence of their thinking, observing the distinctiveness and differences between today’s adolescents and previous generations in terms of their values and their visions of the future — both their own future and the future of this country and the world. In doing so, it aims to create space for reflection on where Slovakia and the surrounding world are truly heading, and where they perhaps should be heading instead. |
